Abstract Fractal Art

Who says mathematicians can't have fun. New Orleans natives Stacy Molinary and Frank Otillio both with Mathematics degrees from The University of New Orleans take a trip to the lighter side of math with works developed through the use of fractals.

There are many ways to define fractals, possibly the most basic is as follows: an object which appears self-similar under varying degrees of magnification. In effect, possessing symmetry across scale, with each small part of the object replicating the structure of the whole.

With a little coaxing to the formulas and a lot of digital texture overlays and color, the process of creation can grow from a boring repetitive geometric shape to a beautiful piece of art. These aren't your parents' fractals.

Two - Mixed digital media. Fractal artwork with photographic texture overlay.
Harvest - Multi-layer fractal / Photoshop.
Heaven & Hell, Katrina - Hurricane Katrina from a survivors perspective.
Antikythera - Composite fractal and photographic texture overlay.
